Delhi has recently been named to worst city in the world for air pollution. The air pollution here kills up to 1.5 million people each year. The main sources of pollution include transit, such as cars, and factories that burn coal. The main pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and types of hydrocarbons. Due to burning, the city has a permanent haze over it fulled with harmful particles the reduce lung function.
There is dispute over the extent of the city's green cover, known as its "flora and fauna". Authorities claimed in 2008 that the green cover had increased from 26 km to 300 km. The Delhi Forest Act acknowledged that for every tree cut down ten sapling trees need to be planted. The actual increase may be only half of what was claimed, and there are estimates that some 100,000 trees had been cut in Delhi. Without the green cover, there will be less oxygen and more CO2 in the air, which can be deadly to any person that breathes it in.

Without trees providing clean oxygen, many of the city's inhabitants are in danger of
chemical poisoning. It is predicted that within the next 10 years, the air in Delhi will be the most deadly in the world.

There is a policy for deforestation, atmospheric pollution, medical waste such as bodily fluids, domestic industry chemical use, and water and sewage treatment from homes. There are action plans to encourage public participation in environmental problems, such as offering rewards to those who carpool and try not to release chemical waste into the air and rivers. No one knows how long the change to get the environment back to healthy levels will take. The widespread implementation, however, depends on how much the public makes a fuss about inaction and actually works to make the environment a better place.
